In the heart of the captivating rolling fields, resided a young shepherd. His being was mostly unadulterated, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was mainly to care for his flock of rams.
Their low murmuring and the murmuring of the wind across the lone tree on the peak were his constant co-dwellers. Day in day, looking out for his charges inculcated in him a feeling of quiet fulfillment.
Yet, there were the occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would pine for companionship. During one such occasion because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy orchestrated a mischievous plan.
Narratives of wolves hunting on sheep had long been circulating in the hamlet. So, the boy opted to exploit this fear and played a joke on the townsfolk.
One day he dashed into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The frightened villagers ran up the hills for rescue but found nothing threatening.
The boy giggled at the confusion on their faces. This trick laughed for a few more days. But, one day, a real wolf did attack the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy ran for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could rescue only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the village only to be met check here with a reprimand on honesty and the results of dishonesty.
The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it stresses how trust once violated, is difficult to earn back. It's a story as pertinent today as it was then.
